OVERVIEW: The Assistant Director of Elementary Special Education is a twelve-month position that reports directly to the Executive Director of Pupil Personnel Services. This individual will be responsible for supporting and overseeing the supervision, evaluation, and development of the preschool and elementary special education program. The Assistant Director will collaborate with administrators, staff, and the community to develop and implement effective programs that meet the needs of students while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and district regulations. Key responsibilities include supporting and guiding special education staff, including teachers, psychologists, therapists, and other support personnel, to ensure the delivery of high-quality instructional services to students with diverse learning needs. This role also involves assisting in the planning and supervision of Extended School Year (ESY) programs, coordinating professional development for special education staff, and monitoring, evaluating, and supporting the ongoing growth and development of the life skills program. This position will play a vital role in fostering inclusive and supportive learning environments for elementary students with special needs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Support the Supervision of Special Education programs
o Supervise and evaluate the performance of special education staff, including teachers, teacher assistants, teacher aides, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, BCBAs, and other support personnel.
o Participate in the hiring process for special education staff.
o Co-facilitate department meetings for special education staff.
o Support and assist in scheduling of professional development for special education staff, including teacher assistants and teacher aides.
o Provide instructional support to special education teachers.
o Assist in determining instructional personnel needs.
o Assist in monitoring, evaluating, and supporting the ongoing growth and development of the life skills program.
o Assist in planning and supervising the ESY programs/services.
o In collaboration with school building administrators, determine teacher assistant/teacher aide needs and participate in the hiring process. o Assist in supervision of after-school SAIL program.
o Monitor and stay current with changes to special education laws, policies, and procedures; communicate updates to administrators and staff, and collaborate to implement necessary adjustments to ensure ongoing compliance.
• CSE Chairperson
o Serve as CSE Chairperson.
o Oversee CSE referral process.
o Oversee quality assurance and ensure the accurate completion and finalization of all secondary-level IEPs and Prior Written Notices (PWNs).
• 504 Committee member o Attend select 504 meetings.
o Oversee 504 referral process.
o Oversee quality assurance and ensure the accurate completion and finalization of all elementary-level 504 plans.
• CPSE Chairperson
o Chairperson of CPSE meetings.
o Serve as the primary liaison for parents, service providers, and external programs.
o Oversee the completion and accuracy of IEPs and PWNs.
o Co-host parent orientation for incoming Kindergarten students.
o Observe students in preschool settings.
• Collaborate with building administrators to monitor the MTSS process and procedures, ensuring that prereferral interventions are implemented effectively and with fidelity.
o Perform other duties as assigned by the administration to ensure the effective implementation of the elementary special education program.
