Job Description

The Locust Valley Central School District is looking for a (2025-2026 School Year) Assistant Principal - High School to join our team in providing a safe, nurturing and challenging classroom environment devoted to helping all students reach their full potential. 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • NYS Certification Building Leader (SBL) or District Leader (SDL) or Administrator Supervisor (SAS)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

SCHOOL PROGRAM DESIGN, CURRICULUM AND STAFF

  • Support the Principal in facilitating achievement of the overall vision/mission for the school.
  • Assist with school-level program planning and assess ongoing progress in meeting goals and objectives.
  • Facilitate staff supervision/appraisal in accordance with district policies.
  • Participate in the identification of staffing needs, hiring/selection, orientation, and assignment of staff.
  • Foster curriculum and staff development.
  • Oversee annual and daily assignments of Teacher Assistant staff.
  • Coordinate extra-curricular clubs and activities; supports the development and ongoing review of extracurricular clubs and activities.
  • Assist the administrative team in interpreting and presenting school and district educational program(s) to students, staff and the community.

STUDENTS

  • Provide visible and effective leadership for students, actively modeling the principles of the district’s character education framework.
  • Ensure that student achievements are enthusiastically celebrated.
  • Help students in resolution of non-academic problems, which may interfere with their receiving full benefit from the school’s educational opportunities.
  • Meet with the student body, or sub-groups, to clarify goals and standards, and to discuss programs and positive school initiatives.
  • Lead PPS meeting efforts; develop schedule and lead early intervention and/or prompt referral and articulation of planning for students having difficulties.
  • Provide fidelity in the implementation of student discipline; incorporating progressive levels of discipline implementing and addressing the Code of Conduct guidelines with specific deliberate attention to the attendance policy.
  • Conduct individual conferences with students, staff, and parents to address academic, behavioral, and social issues.
  • Lead and/or participate in student disciplinary meetings/hearings.

MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS

  • Collaborate with the building leadership team in daily management.
  • Organize NYS Examination administration; develop proctor schedule and communicate testing approach (timing/calendar/approaches) to students/staff.
  • Prepare district and SED reports as delegated by the Principal.
  • Serve as a member of Site-Based management team.
  • Assist the Principal and encourage cooperative involvement of parents and the community, in individual meetings, events, and the Parent Council.
  • Serve as liaison between administrative/general staff and Head of Security.
  • Participate in meetings of the administrative cabinet.

RELATIONSHIPS

  • Supervise: Shares responsibilities of leadership of faculty and staff.
  • Reports to / Is supervised by: High School Principal.
  • Collaborates with staff including but not limited to: Assistant Superintendent, Administrative Cabinet, Principal, Department Leaders, Head Custodian.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

  • Drive initiatives for educational quality and school improvement.
  • Pursue personal professional development.
Work towards annual goals determined in collaboration with the Principal.

Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in education or related field.
  • School administration/leadership experience preferred.
  • Prior high school teaching experience preferred
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills
  • Flexible and adaptable with the ability to handle frequent interruptions, unexpected situations, and a range of duties.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing fair, consistent, and equitable practices aligned with district policies and restorative approaches; ability to manage student behavior proactively while fostering a positive/respectful school culture.
  • Record of responding to incidents with professionalism and sound judgment.
  • Problem solver with the ability to analyze situations, make informed decisions, and resolve conflicts; strong capacity to improve school climate.
