Job Description

The Locust Valley Central School District is looking for a (2026-2027 School Year) teacher to join our team in providing a safe, nurturing and challenging classroom.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • NYS Certification in Students with Disabilities (All Grades)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Teacher is responsible for the well-being and safety of the students, taking attendance, maintaining a functioning classroom, utilizing classroom management skills, leaving a clean classroom, and teaching the provided curriculum.
  • Develop and present curriculum lesson plans in support of student IEPs (course materials and related activities) and assignments to students.
  • Modifies existing instructional plans as necessary to accommodate individual students’ special needs.
  • Assess, evaluate and track student performance and ongoing progress.
  • Build and manage trusting relationships with students, parents, and school staff. 
  • Keep parents informed of student progress through regular communication on IEP progress and feedback.
  • Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student.
  • Provide in-class and at-home assignments based on the lesson plans.
  • Collaborate with teachers on building, evolving lesson plans for a more consistent student learning experience.
  • Develop new ideas and concepts through a variety of strategies to help students uncover new ideas of their own.
  • Working with students individually if they need extra help and support.
Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience as a Special Education Life Skills teacher is preferred.
  • Experience with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).
  • Proven leadership, organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.  Attention to detail (Maintain accurate records, reports).
  • Ability to engage, motivate and challenge students.
  • Proven ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues and partner with students & parents in the learning process.
